Dental implants are placed in the jaw bone to replace missing natural teeth. They are made from titanium or titanium zirconium. They mimic the missing root and are placed surgically using local anaesthetic. This is normally carried out in a dental surgery.

After allowing for a healing period, the synthetic root is used to anchor a fixing for crowns or bridges to be attached to. The implant can also be used to retain a denture or bridge that replaces all the missing teeth in a jaw. Implants do not require the removal of sound tooth tissue from adjacent teeth as in conventional bridge preparation.
